Sewing projects that don’t need an entire page devoted to them.

First Shirt

Don’t laugh, but this was my first ever big sewing project.

Using McCalls Sewing Pattern M4399. It tooks months as I worked on it bit by bit, trying to make sure I had the right pieces, learning about ironing on interfacing, using a mini travel sewing machine.

I made all my initial sewing mistakes with this. Including choosing the Xlg-Xxl-XXxl size sewing package, meaning I ended up with a totally oversized shirt that I could never actually wear.

It was my first sewing project, and it would be followed by other sewing projects that didn’t turn out the way I wanted. But with each project I understood more about what was involved, and how do do what I needed to do. Throwing yourself into unfamiliar waters is often the best way to learn.

Glovelet/Wristwarmer

These are actually really easy to make. With a bit of experimenting, you can easily make one out of one piece of fabric. In my case, polar fleece.

ConFuzzled T-Shirt

The theme of ConFuzzled 2017 was “Most Excellent Adventure”. Basically celebrating their 10th Anniversary with a slightly time-travel esque looking back at the journey the convention has made to get to this point.

So I decided to create something that fit the theme.

I collected all the official ConFuzzled T-Shirts that I’d gained from each of the five previous ConFuzzled conventions I’d been to (bought duplicates for the ones I still wanted to wear), and montaged them into a single T-Shirt.

It took some planning. Figuring out which part of each shirt was the most iconic, figuring out which pieces to cut out. I used cut out newspaper shapes to figure out how the final individual patterns would fit together, and then got to cutting and sewing. Worked out pretty nice!

As a bonus. The “base” shirt is from the first ConFuzzled convention I went to in 2012, so it has “5th Anniversary” symbol on the back. It’s appropriate as the shirt I made it into kinda celebrates my 5th anniversary of attending ConFuzzled!

Purple Jacket

My first go with McCall’s M5252 Sewing Patterin.

This was actually a commission from Tapewolf. Took a bit of trouble finding the right zip, but I had the fabric, a good pattern, I had more experience by this stage, and I made sure to get the right size.

Tape was happy with the result.

McCall Jumpsuit

I picked up a pattern for a jumpsuit: McCall's M7518

I like jumpsuits, so I brought it home... and didn't work on it for years.

Finally, I got to work on it during some crafting meetups I helped organise. Took me one session to cut out the patterns, and another to do the bulk of sewing it together, finishing it a few days later.

The result... well, the zipper could have been sewn better, and I accidentally sewed the fabric inside out, but it got done, and was comfy!

One thing I'm proud of is the cuffs. I asked the fabric shop (WM Trimmings, Capel St.) what fabric was best for cuffs and they suggested ribbed knitted stretch fabric. So that's what I used:

I'm really hapy how I sewed the cuffs. One thing I did was ignore the instructions in the pattern, since they seemed to assume I had thinner fabric. Instead I followed some YouTube tutorials. Specifically this one, and this one.
